Seniors
Welcome to our Seniors Page, where you can learn about some of the special services we offer to Powell River Seniors.
Graduates of Memoir Writing Courses Meet
Some of the graduates of the Memoir Writing for Seniors course have committed to continuing their memoir writing in a dedicated way. The Library offers a monthly workshop for these senior writers to share a new piece of memoir writing once a month and receive feedback, while offering an ear and feedback on the works of others. The workshop is facilitated by writer/editor and Seniors Services Coordinator Sandra Tonn. Group 1 meets
Book Clubs
It sounds kind of regimented and orderly, doesn’t it? But judging from animated discussions and the howls of laughter emanating from the corner table in the Library, our book clubs are anything but. You have two clubs to choose from, or choose both.
The Afternoon Book Club meets at the Library every third Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
The Evening Book Club meets at the Library every first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
If you need to get a copy of this month’s book and the Library doesn’t have one available, please make your Interlibrary Loan request online or by contacting the Library.
See our Events Calendar for details of upcoming meetings.
Finally, here are links to some great book club resources.
Books by Mail
Do you know anyone who needs Books by Mail? Tell them about this new Library service.
Anyone who is sick, disabled or who just can't get to the Library easily can register with us to receive books through the mail. It's available to anyone in our service
Books On Wheels
Does a disability or illness mean you are homebound? Please let us know. Library volunteers want to deliver Library materials free to your home on a regular basis. Contact the Library for more information or if you would like to help or if you know someone you think could benefit from this service.
Community Resources
Powell River has some great resources for seniors. Here are links to some of them.
Free Computer Classes at the Library
Did you know that the Library offers free computer classes? Every two weeks we offer a different class at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Learn how to use the Internet, email, basic word processing or just get an introduction to computers. Often the people who attend these sessions are seniors who just never needed to use computers but now would like to so they can connect with their families, sort out travel arrangements and find out all sorts of useful information. Phone the Library at 604-485-4796 to sign up as space is limited. Consult our Events Calendar to see when these classes are offered as well as all the neat stuff the Library has coming up.
Large Print Books
It seems to happen to most of us sooner or later—the words on the page just seem to get smaller and smaller. We have the perfect remedy in our extensive collection of large print books. Fiction and Non-Fiction, literature and beach reads—take your pick. They are there for your enjoyment.
Want to see how we decide which large print books to buy? The Statement of Principles in our Collection Development Policy applies.
Library Reads to Seniors!
It happens to many of us later in life that we begin to have difficulty reading. The Library's decided to do something about that for Powell River seniors living at Olive Devaud and Kiwanis Manor residences. In our Read to Seniors program we choose an eclectic mix of material and then once
Other Websites of Interest to Seniors
Here are a collection of other websites that you might find useful.
Recorded Books
Check out our collection of recorded books. A good selection of both fiction and non-fiction are available so you can listen to your favourites at home or in your car. Space is limited for this collection but we try to change it up regularly.
Want to see how we decide which recorded books to buy? Read our Collection Development Policy for Recorded Books.
Seniors Events Calendar
Book groups, author readings and more! See our calendar of upcoming events especially of interest to you. If you have a suggestion for a good event or program, you can use General Inquiries to tell us about it, or come into the Library and tell us about it.
